  • BMW 328 gearbox in reproduction

BMW announced today that it will build 55 examples of a reproduction gearbox for the iconic BMW 328. There aren't many applications for a modern-day copy of a 75-year old gearbox from a BMW 328. There aren't even very many BMW 328s; only 464 were built over its run from 1936-1940. BMW is offering the 55 gearboxes mostly for the benefit of the vintage racing crowd. The new (old) gearbox is now being produced through a collaboration between BMW Classic and ZF. ZF, appropriately enough, purchased a division of the original gearbox manufacturer for the 328, Hurth, in the 1990s. Reproduced from a...

  • Volvo i-ART diesel injection technology

Volvo hasn't yet seen fit to bring its diesel engines to U.S. shores, but if and when that day occurs the Swedish automaker will have some of the most advanced diesel technology on the road. The company promises its new fuel pressure sensor technology is as groundbreaking as its lambda sensor for catalytic converters in 1976. That's quite a claim, but the technology could back it up. Traditionally, the car's electronic brain takes fuel pressure readings via a single sensor in the common rail. Volvo's new technology involves using a little computer on each fuel injector to measure pressure...

Does Your Car's Black Box Need A Firewall? Startup Firm Thinks So

It's no secret that our cars are becoming increasingly technological. For many, it's a source of unease. • BMW 1-Series (European model) fitted with prototype 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine

It's inevitable: With increasing pressure from fuel-efficiency and emission regulations globally, engines are going to get smaller. But BMW has simply taken its time-tested design principles and applied them to a new type of engine: its first-ever three-cylinder, which you can think of as half of its traditional inline six. As Dr. Heidelinde Holzer explained it during a media briefing at BMW's U.S. headquarters in New Jersey on Monday, the company's engine designers have long viewed 0.5 liters as the right displacement for each cylinder. That leads naturally to a displacement of 2.0 liters...

Tesla Model S Meets The Jaws Of Life: Video

For decades, accident scene first responders had set protocols for removing victims trapped in the wreckage of an automobile. Whether the car was built by Kia or by Hummer, cutting off the roof was generally a matter of slicing through the A-pillars, followed by the B and C-pillars. We’re...

  • Pagani Huayra, 2013 Geneva Motor Show

The Pagani Huayra supercar is without doubt a work of art, in addition to being one of the best performing cars on the planet. However, until now the car had one key flaw, at least it did in the eyes of Pagani founder and chief designer Horacio Pagani. That flaw was the car’s audio system. With the sounds of a 700-horsepower AMG V-12 emanating just inches from your ears when driving the Huayra, you may be wondering who gives a stuff about the audio system, but for a perfectionist like Horacio, only the best will suffice. That’s why Pagani has now partnered with one of the most...
