The Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang has the speed to play with supercars, so why not take one where supercars play?

This video from SVT Performance shows a current-generation GT500 doing a full-bore lap of the Nurburgring, surely a ride any car enthusiast would want to tag along for.

Although Ford hasn't released any official 'Ring lap times for the GT500, SVT Performance says the video was included in a package of press materials from the company. The GT500's lap time of 7:39.28 wasn't quite fast enough to beat the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28's 7:37.47, but it does put the Mustang ahead of the Camaro ZL1.

Making that possible is a 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 with 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. It pushes the 3,852-pound GT500 coupe (the convertible weighs 3,970 pounds) around on grippy Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires. Ford says it will reach 60 mph from a standstill in 3.7 seconds, and 100 mph in 7.9 seconds. The factory estimates the top speed to be in the neighborhood of 200 mph for the hardtop.

Sadly, 2014 may be the last hurrah for the GT500. A completely redesigned 2015 Mustang is coming soon, and rumor has it that Ford may drop the Shelby GT500 name from the top performance model, reviving the Mach 1 name instead.
