Ford has denied outright that it will expand the Mustang lineup, and claims the AutoWeek and Autocar stories are completely false. Both publications released stories earlier this week claiming to have an inside source that was certain the Mustang lineup would include a four-door and estate variants. Ford said in a statement: “Mustang is an icon and will continue in its current form: a unique, two-door, rear-wheel drive, 2+2 performance car.”

However, at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, Ford will unveil a four-door, rear-wheel-drive concept car. The concept, known as "The Interceptor", is based on the Mustang's rear-wheel-drive architecture but it is not a Mustang and no production plans have been announced. This could mean simply that AutoWeek’s source was confused by the plans for this Interceptor concept, which could possibly go into production. Ford says it will release more information on the Interceptor on December 31st.
