Corrosion is the enemy of all cars, even modern ones, but particularly cars in the north. Road salt, water, snow, and ice combine to erode metal and bubble paint, making an eyesore of a car--and sometimes doing much worse. In the case of the 271,000 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX4 SUVs recalled today, much worse means causing the steering system to fail via corrosion of the strut tower housing, a situation no one wants to experience. The vehicles affected were built between 1996-2004 (Pathfinder) and 1997-2003 (QX4). Of the total, only 45,330 are Infinitis. 195,991 of the vehicles affected...

A concept this out of the box just couldn't have come from an actual car company. And it didn't; it's a design study by designer Marko Lukovic. Fittingly called the Supersonic, the concept utilizes some strategies that have been working for the world's fastest cars for years: long, narrow body; low stance and bullet-train-like nose--all things that will increase the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Seeing as how this concept appears to be a city commuter, those aerodynamics won't be used for record-breaking speed but rather to efficiently pump as much mileage out of the powertrain as possible...

Nanotechnology, the study of materials and engineering on a molecular scale, has the potential to completely change the vehicles we drive. We've looked at self-healing polymers that can eliminate scratches in paintwork, plastics injected with millions of tiny air bubbles to reduce their weight without losing strength, and additive layer manufacturing, building up components from incredibly thin layers rather than moulding, casting or milling. Now it's the turn of graphene, an incredibly strong yet incredibly thin graphite-based substance. Automotive materials will have to start delivering in...

For better or worse, the new Beetle is here, trading some of its "chick car" rep for a more masculine appearance. Whether that will convince more men to buy the car--or simply serve to drive off the women that flocked to the last generation--remains to be seen, but whatever the eventualities, it's here, and it shares a lot with the rest of VW's lineup. So much so that we're at a loss as to why anyone would buy the Beetle over, say, an equivalently-configured Golf or GTI. Even the Beetle R has us scratching our heads, as you'll be giving up the utility of the Golf R for nothing in return aside...
