Florida is the site of many things--most of them bizarre and occasionally unfathomable acts of stupidity. But it may also soon be the site of a new exotic car manufacturing plant, if Spain's a.d. Tramontana gets its way.

The Spanish company is considering the Sarasota-Manatee area or a location in Broward County (the Miama-Fort Lauderdale area) for construction of the company's newest model, the 888-horsepower, $800,000 XTR.

Right now the project doesn't appear to be much beyond the planning phases, but Tramontana is likely to be eager to expand--its current facilities only allow production of 12 cars per year. The brand's exclusive U.S. distributor, Euromotorsport, is also pushing for the new plant.

But why Florida? Because Port Manatee, near Sarasota, has free-trade status, meaning the company wouldn't have to pay import taxes on its parts and materials.

According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the planned facility would be a 20,000-square-foot factory employing 20 workers. That's miniscule by large-scale, mainstream production standards, but it could add 7-8 XTRs per year to the company's bottom line. Tramontana is also considering production of up to 120 $400,000 crossover vehicles per year at the facility as well.

The crossover's design spec is even more interesting than an exotic carmaker opening a Florida factory: it's supposedly intended to carry four people across all terrain, reach a top speed of 180 mph, and travel 2,000 miles on one tank of gasoline.

That, friends, sounds crazy even by Florida standards.
