Both are significant milestones. After eight years in production, the current-generation Mustang has averaged 125,000 units per year. The bulk of that was at the beginning of the model run, from 2005-2007, but after a slight dip in 2009, Mustang sales have increased year-on-year since 2011.

Of course, the rich and varied history of the Mustang is also part of the reason for the Mustang's social success. As the car draws into its 50th year, it's hard not to look back at where it started in mid-1964 and where it is now.
It's also hard not to think about what's next for the Mustang. Due for replacement in the 2015 model year (i.e. sometime next calendar year), the speculation train about the next-gen Mustang is at full steam.
A four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo engine, rated at around 330 horsepower, may be coming. The Evos Concept of 2011 may provide some styling direction--though, as our spy shots show, not too much. Whatever it looks like, the next Mustang will be sold globally--and designed so from the start.
