Two Dutton S2 Commander amphibious vehicles made the trek across the English Channel last week, taking a total of 7 hours and 5 minutes to travel from Dover in the UK to Calais in France. The time comes no where near the record of the Sealegs amphibious boat, which can do the journey in just 43 minutes. Another amphibious car, the Miata-based Gibbs Aquada, takes only 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Unlike the two just mentioned, the Dutton S2 is fully road-legal, has true 4WD capabilities, comes with either gasoline or diesel engines, right or left drive configurations and costs less than $50,000.

Based on the Suzuki Jimny 4WD, the Dutton S2 runs the same 1.3L four-cylinder powerplant mated to a modified transfer case. Top speed on the open water is a snail-like 6mph.
