  • Ford considering Lincoln compact to slot below MKS

Lincoln's recent rebirth as Ford's focus for luxury, led by the 2009 MKS sedan, has targeted it for a market that doesn't focus heavily on compact cars. The game is changing, however, as even BMW and Mercedes are looking at four-cylinders and smaller cars for the U.S. market as efficiency and emissions concerns rise. According to Derrick Kuzak, Ford's product development guru, that train of thought could be making a stop at Lincoln. Specifics are still a ways out, but Kuzak says the company sees "room for a smaller car in the Lincoln brand," reports Automotive News. With the MKS (pictured)...

  • Lexus first in luxury owner loyalty survey, Saab last

Luxury brands take particular pains to breed loyalty in their customers, since the cars they sell ostensibly offer something beyond the best value for money, whether that's a style, a feel or a history. Cultivating a sense of belonging ensures buyers will return to the brand when they need to replace their current vehicle, and that's a sure way to grow sales. According to the latest J.D. Power and Associates survey, Lexus has done a very good job of this, as almost half of its owners traded in for another of the brand's offerings in the first quarter of 2008. Last place Saab saw only 8.8% of...

  • Bob Lutz calls for crash-test freeze to aid small-car production

A number of small and fuel-efficient cars in General Motors' global portfolio, such as the Chevrolet Beat (concept pictured), are being kept from U.S. sale because of differences in the official crash test procedures to those in Europe and elsewhere. Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman and chief of product development, thinks a three-year freeze on crash test requirements would help get those vehicles to market and improve fuel economy while other, longer-term solutions are developed.
