The Acabion GTBO could best be described as a high-output engine with a couple of wheels and a pair of seats attached. The small pod-shaped vehicle is the creation of Swiss firm Acabion and it’s claimed to be the fastest vehicle in production now that construction has started at a factory in Lucerne, Switzerland. It features a hybrid drivetrain, which consists of a small turbocharged 1.3L engine and an electric motor, giving a combined output of 750hp. When cruising, the electric motor alone can drive the vehicle to a top speed of 40mph but at max output the GTBO is claimed to be able...

John Cooper Works and Mini establish ‘Works’ brandThe John Cooper Works name is synonymous with the Mini brand, the partnership dating back almost 50 years, so it’s not surprising that the British-based tuner along with Mini have formed a new sub-brand. Aptly named the ‘Works,’ the new sub-brand will be responsible for all...

Perks of the job: Ferrari F1 driver gets custom Fiat 500F1 drivers are usually given a carmaker’s top performance model when they sign up to race under them, probably because anything else would be painstakingly slow in comparison to an F1 racer, so imagine the surprise when Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was handed the keys to a humble Fiat 500...

Iconic Mini gets a Chinese cloneChina’s motor industry has been frequently maligned in the automotive press for its less-than-original designs and the latest car from one of the country’s biggest manufacturers, Lifan Auto, has ripped off not only the design of one car but also the name of another. Carmakers forced to add wider seats for America’s spreading waistlineAmericans - unlike their cars - are getting wider every year. Unfortunately, carmakers aren’t keeping up with the nation’s spreading waistline, especially when it comes to their seats, and passengers are starting to feel the pinch. That’s why at this year’s Detroit Auto Show...

Million dollar Corvette ZR1 and car-crushing Robosaurus at Barrett-Jackson 2008This year’s Barrett-Jackson auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona, had one of the most varied lineups in the event’s history, with several yet-to-be released models, a car-crushing robot dinosaur, and the usual assortment of ultra-rare muscle cars all going under the hammer. One of the...

We’ve seen a number of cars go up against all sorts of aircraft over the past 12 months, including an F1 car and supercar competing against a jet-fighter and even a Volkswagen Touareg towing a Boeing 747. This time we have an A1GP race car taking on a Boeing 777 in a drag race at New Zealand's Auckland airport. It was a case of one win each in the two race event. Given a head start, the Boeing 777 kept the A1 racer, driven by A1 Team New Zealand's Jonny Reid, at Bay after he had trouble getting initial traction on the damp runway in the first duel. However, a re-match was ordered. Reid...

Michigan: Gov't, business must join forces for alt fuelsCar makers have belabored the near-total lack of availability and distribution channels of most alternative fuels to the point of exhaustion. They are simply stating the obvious when they point out that hydrogen-fueled cars will not become a reality until a fuel supply network is in place. And...

A few weeks ago we covered TTAC’s 2007 “Ten Worst Automobiles” list and were a little surprised that only vehicles from Detroit made the list. Being somewhat wider in scope, the “Ten Turkeys” list from Forbes shares the hate with cars from all over the globe. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop Chrysler from dominating the list, and even topping it with its seemingly cursed Sebring. The list shares many similarities with TTAC’s, but the differences are what stand out. The TTAC Ten Worst-winning Jeep Compass didn’t make the list although the Dodge...

UK targets foreign fine breakersJust when you thought the UK had come up with every possible way to get a fine out of a driver (speed cameras disguised as trash bins, doubled congestion charges and parking tickets among others), they go and find a whole untapped market of fines. It seems 700,000 fines go unpaid every year...

The EU's proposed alternative to the U.S.-run GPS system, the Galileo satellite project, is now facing strong opposition from some of its strongest backers. The Galileo project has consistently run afoul of EU member nations' budget expectations, with a projected price of €3.4 billion (US$4.7 billion) and now member states including the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, are in disagreement over the allotment of funding. Germany's primary fear is that new funding could lead to infighting over which member states get the contracts to build the satellite and related infrastructure. It's...
