A new world record for the highest amount ever paid for a car license plate was set this weekend when an Emirati businessman placed a bid of Dh52.2 million, about $14.5 million, for the number "1" at an auction in Abu Dhabi. This almost doubles the previous record of Dh25.2 million that was paid for the license plate "5" and makes last month’s sale of the United Kingdom plate "F1" for $880,000 look like a bargain. Buyer Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri told local reporters from ArabianBusiness that he hadn't bought the plate as investment but predicted its value would likely double within two...

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a strategy to capture, store and eventually recycle carbon from vehicles that run on fossil fuels such as petrol or diesel. Their concept car uses ordinary liquid fuel but the carbon contained in the fuel is trapped in the vehicle for later processing. It can then be sent back to a processing plant where it could be transformed into new fuel. The set-up requires an onboard fuel processor designed to separate hydrogen in the fuel from the carbon. The pure hydrogen is then used to power the vehicle, while the carbon is stored...

Volkswagen reached a new milestone today, the carmaker announcing that it has sold one million vehicles fitted with a Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG). We all know slowing down for a speed bump and then accelerating back to your original speed saps your fuel, but now a recent study commissioned by the UK’s AA motoring group has found out just how bad it really is. Researchers found that a car capable of achieving 58mgp fuel economy when cruising at an uninterrupted 30mph speed would only deliver 31mpg when it’s forced to slow down for a series of speed bumps. Along with the added fuel consumption also come all the other nasties of burning more fuel, namely, increased pollution. The study found that reducing speed limits to 20mph...
