Jay Leno’s managed to get his hands on a Mercedes-Benz 300SL, arguably the most legendary car to wear the three-pointed star. Just last week we saw the very first 300SL to be built, a Briggs Cunningham-owned example from 1954 that’s now listed in the national Historic Vehicle Association register. Jay’s car is from 1955, and like all classics it has an interesting story behind it.

When Jay and his crew found the car, languishing in a trailer in the desert, the engine was in pieces. Fortunately, the interior was pretty much intact, and despite its racing history the car was never involved in any major accidents.

It’s since been restored to working condition, though none of the aesthetic elements have been touched yet. That won’t be the case for long, as Jay plans to bring it back to its original condition.
