The Ford Mustang is not just an iconic pony car or a retro-modern throw-back to simpler times. It's a fan-favorite performance vehicle that has a rabid and enthusiastic base of drivers, tuners and manufacturers behind it from all around the world.

It hasn’t always been this way, however. The original concept of the Mustang was for a reasonably priced “personal coupe” that, according to one of the car’s founding fathers, Lee Iacocca, would appeal to both men and women. Furthermore, Ford only projected 100,000 sales for the car in its first year of production. But following its world debut at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, the Mustang went on to sell more than one million units in its first 18 months, smashing all expectations and setting several new records. It's also America's only pony car to stay in uninterrupted production over four decades of development and revisions.

To this day, the Ford Mustang remains one of the highest-selling sports cars in the world and in honor of that status, we’re celebrating the pony car across the High Gear Media empire this month and next so check out our full index of stories below.

In two weeks, we'll also bring you the first drive of the latest 2011 Ford Mustang, including the return of the 5.0 Mustang. Then in April, we'll bring it all home with a wrap-up on the day the Mustang was born--April 17.
