With the ensuing world price of oil inevitably rising it’s only a matter of time before the popularity of electric vehicles really take on. We already have a production electric car in the form of the Tesla roadster but the latest trend is the innovative designs that are cropping up in regular neighbourhoods.

Meet the EVette, a custom one-off build by Florida couple, Tom & Yvette Sines. Their electric vehicle features such innovations as a joystick, “drive by wire” steering system, a zero-degree turning circle and a full composite body. Best of the all, the car’s range is 200 miles, which costs roughly $2 for the electricity.

We wonder why a backyard inventor can create a reliable electric car on a shoestring budge while we’re still getting silence on the issue from the large auto manufacturers.
