Even if you're not a NASCAR fan, you've probably noticed that the race cars haven't looked like the cars they're ostensibly based on for a long time. Ford is accelerating plans to reduce the number of vehicle platforms it uses across the globe to just nine by the end of 2013, pushing the plan one year ahead of schedule. The move mirrors the successful strategy of automakers such as Volkswagen and Toyota in which a small subset of core platforms are used for multiple models sold across the globe. The information was revealed by Ford global marketing chief Jim Farley at the recent Automotive News World Congress. "It won't be 11 platforms" as earlier planned, Farley said. "It will be nine by the end of 2013." Farley didn’t mention which...

Ford’s new global design strategy so far appears to be working, with the largely European designed and engineered Fiesta and Focus compacts doing particularly well around the globe, including in the U.S. where such cars have proven to be a hard sell in the past. More recently we saw the 2013 Ford Escape debut, a car that will be sold in Europe as the replacement for the Kuga and is set to hit showrooms later this year. The next globally designed model to wear the blue oval is the new 2013 Ford Fusion, which makes its debut this week at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show and is the first sedan...

Guilty Pleasure: Ford Fiesta Mark ILast week, I was torn between the Pinto Cruising Wagon and the early Fiesta Ghia for the week's Guilty Pleasure, and went with the Pinto because millions of Yurpeans still love the early Fiesta.
