The inaugural season for the Formula E Championship commences next month, and coinciding with the impending start of the new electric car racing series is the availability of the sport’s Spark-Renault SRT_01E race car in Forza Motorsport 5.

Available as a free download in the Xbox Live marketplace, this marks the first time in video game history that a fully-electric single-seater has been featured as a playable car on a home entertainment system. The announcement was made during this week’s Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany.

And unlike the actual Spark-Renault SRT_01E, which will only be raced at street circuits in major cities around the globe, in the video game fans will be able to drive the car on some of the most iconic race tracks including a number of top F1 circuits.

The Spark-Renault SRT_01E is common to all teams competing in the inaugural season of Formula E. Power comes from an electric motor originally developed by McLaren for its P1 supercar. Peak output is rated at 200 kilowatts (270 horsepower) and all of this is channeled to the rear wheels via a Hewland sequential gearbox with fixed ratios.

Overseeing all the systems integration was Renault, while the aerodynamics, which is optimized to facilitate overtaking, was honed by Williams. Spark Racing Technologies is responsible for building each of the cars.

The first Formula E race will take place in Beijing on September 13, 2014. There will be ten races in the first season, with the final taking place in London on June 27, 2015.
