Rumors of a G65 AMG SUV, potentially packing in excess of 600 horsepower, began to circulate last May. Back then, we told you it was possible that the G65 would follow in the footsteps of the built-to-order G63 AMG, which itself put out a respectable 444 horsepower from a naturally aspirated V-12.

We even hinted that a G65 or two had already been built, as demonstrators for Mercedes’ build-to-order program. Now comes word from French site Caradisiac that the next generation of G Class will get a G65 AMG variant, and that the uber-SUV will be displayed for the first time in April, with sales beginning in June.

Power will allegedly come from a biturbo, 6.0-liter V-12 engine, as used in the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG. In the big sedan, the engine cranks out some 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, but Caradisiac says to expect a more modest  612 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque in G65 guise.

Expect an AMG Speedshift Plus seven-speed transmission to route that power to all four wheels, which should provide better-than-adequate acceleration. Prices are said to start at 220,000 euros (nearly $291,000) in the European market, and there’s no word yet on whether or not the G65 will make it stateside.

Color us cynics, but we’re tossing this one in the rumor bin for now, so we wouldn’t recommend you head down to your Mercedes-Benz dealer with a deposit check in hand just yet.
