2009 Cadillac Escalade EXT AWD 4dr

Today’s headline probably comes as little surprise considering the Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV and its EXT sibling have been at the top of America’s most stolen vehicle list for the past several years.

According to information compiled by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Cadillac Escalade SUV is still the most stolen vehicle in the country, and is roughly six times as likely to be targeted by thieves as a typical 2008 to 2010 model year vehicle.

The worst offender is the Cadillac Escalade EXT, with 14 out of every 1,000 models insured likely to have a theft claim lodged by its owner.

To make matters worse, the Escalade also has one of the steepest average losses per claim--a surprisingly high $10,555 per theft. This costs insurers, on average, about $114 for every model insured every year, though the figure has been dropping over the years.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Audi A6 is the least stolen vehicle in the country.

Its average loss per claim is a substantial $16,882 but it only costs insurers around $8 per year for every model insured since so few are stolen.
