If you think the racing sim setup you have in your living room is impressive, think again. Audi's racing simulator on show at videogame show Gamescom 2011 in Cologne, Germany makes a mockery of your steering wheel and pedals combo.

That's because Audi has created an entire R8 LMS GT3 race car replica and with help from Sony PlayStation and Gran Turismo 5, turned it into the ultimate racing simulator.

It looks so authentic you might think that Audi took one of its actual, highly successful R8 racers and converted it, but the whole simulator was designed from scratch, so as to feel as realistic as possible when playing Gran Turismo 5 within. Gamers climb over a simplified roll cage into a real racing bucket seat, but unlike the real vehicle a passenger can hop in for the "ride".

All the data from the game is shown on the car's actual display rather than on-screen in the game, so a blip of the throttle will send the rev-counter soaring. A proper racing wheel and paddle shifters add to the driving experience and you'll be dancing over a proper racing pedal box too.

Dolby Surround sound feeds the noises into the cockpit and pneumatic cylinders in the car's suspension means that you'll feel every bump and camber in the circuit, as well as the simulated feeling of braking, cornering and accelerating forces.

The simulator was created in only six weeks. Jürgen Zürn, Head of Test and Production of quattro GmbH, describes the thrill of racing in the simulator, "For many fans, playing a game that is as advanced as Gran Turismo 5 in our race car will no doubt be a unique experience."

If you happen to find yourself in Cologne any time in the next few days then the simulator is available to drive for all Gamescom visitors. The show runs from today, August 18 until Sunday, August 21.
