Toyota is introducing a new Eco Drive indicator on its Japanese model automatics to provide drivers with a visual feedback of when they’re driving the vehicle most efficiently.

Based on a number of factors such as accelerator use, engine and transmission efficiency and speed and rate of acceleration, the Eco Drive Indicator, located on the instrument panel, lights up when the vehicle is being operated in a fuel-efficient manner.

Although results may vary—depending on the level of traffic and conditions such as the frequency of starts from stop and of acceleration, as well as distance driven— ToMoCo claims the Eco Drive Indicator can improve fuel efficiency by approximately 4%.

Though its probably more of a marketing stunt than anything, it helps Toyota cement its place as the greenest auto maker – at least in the minds of drivers.
