Earlier today, we brought you fresh spy shots of a test mule for a new coupe crossover Mercedes-Benz plans to launch in 2015. The vehicle, based on the bones of the M-Class, is aimed directly at the BMW X6 and a similar coupe crossover being developed by Audi.

According to a new report, the new Mercedes, which most are predicting to be labeled an MLC, will be joined by a second, larger coupe crossover based on GL-Class running gear.

Autobild reports that this second coupe crossover, to be labeled a GL Coupe, or GLC for short, could be in production by 2016.

If built, the GLC’s basic footprint would likely remain similar to that of the GL but the vehicle’s profile would be much lower and a shooting brake-style rear adopted to help differentiate the two.

The vehicle would compete against the oft-rumored Audi Q8 and a handful of new upmarket SUVs from the likes Bentley, Lamborghini and Maserati. BMW may also get in on the action with its own X7 supersized SUV.

The reason for it is because of booming demand for pricey SUVs and crossovers here in the U.S. as well as in China and parts of Russia. While luxury sedans were once the staple among well-heeled car shoppers, lifestyle-oriented vehicles continue to gain in popularity.
