For wind-in-your-face motoring with a decidedly modern bent, there are few cars that offer more smiles per dollar than the Ariel Atom. Soon, it will see yet another upgrade to the new 3.5R specification, bringing improved handling and performance.

Based on the Atom 3.5 introduced in late 2012 (pictured), the Atom 3.5R keeps the familiar supercharged Honda engine, but adds a new charge cooler and more boost to bring total power output to 350 hp, a rise of 40 hp. Öhlins TTX dampers are also added, replacing the previous remote reservoir dampers with the new in-line internal reservoir units, which Ariel says improve ride quality and handling, reports Autocar.

Other upgrades include a Sadev six-speed gearbox like the one used on the Atom V8, controlled by a Geartronic controller. Kumho high-performance tires are standard spec, increasing grip to match the improved power, shift speed, and handling.

Although Ariel Motor Company is still finalizing the 3.5R's livery and look, orders for the new 3.5R are open now, with first deliveries expected to customers around the middle of the summer.
