The Frankfurt Motor Show is fast approaching, even though the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance has yet to happen, and the previews and teasers for the German show are coming just as quickly. The latest to arrive is the Jaguar C-X16 concept, teased here in this first official sketch.

Looking an awful lot like the current range of Jaguar XK coupes, the C-X16 promises to show the future of Jaguar sports car design. While the proportions may be familiar, the concept will likely have unique, forward-looking details in the lights, aerodynamics, and interior.

As Jaguar's director of design, Ian Callum, puts it, "Great Jaguars have always been beautiful, innovative and have looked firmly to the future. The finished C-X16 concept has the potential to do these things while retaining the ability to surprise, to excite and invigorate."

Yep, that's a lot of double-talk, but global brand director Adrian Hallmark has some more informative words about the C-X16: "Jaguar has set in place bold, ambitious plans for the future. This production concept demonstrates the depth of design and engineering ability we have within Jaguar to make these plans come to life – I look forward to sharing this latest, exciting step at the Frankfurt Motor Show."

Calling it a production concept means it's less likely to be a pure design exercise and more a nearly-ready street vehicle--though Jaguar has shown it's willing to take a design concept to production under the right circumstances, as it is planning to do with the C-X75. A new Jaguar coupe that packs proven proportions with new engineering and details? Frankfurt should be exciting this year.
