Peugeot’s 205 GTI is a 1980s-era hero.

Regarded as one of the best hot hatches ever built, the cars dominated not only on the road but also in rally competition, including in top-level Group B events.

Peugeot 205 GTIs in good condition are highly sought, which is why it comes as little surprise that the cars are selling for record prices.

A 1989 example, equipped with a 1.9-liter engine (earlier versions came with a 1.6-liter unit), was sold on July 31 at a classic car auction in the United Kingdom for £30,938 (approximately $40,342). That’s a new record for the car and more than £12,000 ($15,645) above the estimate.

The silver car, sold by Silverstone Auctions, was first registered in May 1989 and put into storage in 2004 after covering just 7,986 miles. Its pristine condition and minor modifications are what led to the significant bidding activity.

Sadly, Peugeot never offered the 205 GTI in the United States while the brand was still operating here. The good news is that since the cars are older than 25 years, they’re eligible for import without compliance requirements.
