In the early days of Formula One racing, safety was largely an afterthought. Not only did drivers lack lap belts and shoulder harnesses, but aside from leather or cotton “skull caps,” there were no crash helmets to speak of. At speeds in excess of 155 miles per hour, we can only imaging what taking a stone or a chunk of tire to the face must have felt like. Despite this, it wasn’t until Rudolf Caracciola’s life was saved by a surplus tanker’s helmet that Formula One began to rethink its policies on safety equipment. Caracciola was hit in the head by a bird during...

This year’s Goodwood Revival featured a remarkable showing of pre-Second World War German Formula One cars, known as “Silver Arrows” for their distinctive bare-aluminum bodies. While seeing Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows run is impressive, seeing them run against cars from Auto Union (now Audi) is breathtaking. While many of the Mercedes Silver Arrows survived World War II, most of the Auto Union cars did not. Two Auto Union Type Ds were tracked down in the 1980s (one in Russia and one in the Ukraine), but each was nothing more than a bare assemblage of scrapped parts...

Last week, Codemasters released a gameplay trailer and a demo of the upcoming F1 2012 racing sim. Today, a few laps of the United States' own Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, has been made possible through the game. The video, from YouTuber Frooglesim, shows the COTA in all of its virtual glory. While it's not quite photo-realistic, it's surprisingly close, and it's by far the best look at the track to date, even before the real-world track's construction is completed.
