Anyone ordering a new Tesla [NSDQ:TSLA] Model S can now add a glass roof option.
It costs $1,500 and not only blocks out 98 percent of UV rays but also keeps cabin temperatures cool, thanks in part to protective layers within the glass.
The same glass is used for the panoramic windshield of the Model X SUV and was also featured on the Model 3 prototypes presented in March.
CEO Elon Musk said that ensuring the glass roof provided excellent rollover safety took great effort and is the reason we haven’t seen the option earlier.

The technology behind the glass is from a special technology group within Tesla. The group, which includes a former Apple materials engineer, helped develop the solar roof tiles presented by SolarCity in October.
The only downside of the glass roof option is that it isn’t compatible with satellite radio and roof rack options. Customers wanting those will have to stick with the panoramic sunroof, which costs $2,000.
There’s more good news for Model S buyers, at least those opting for the range-topping P100D model. Musk said an “Easter egg” would be available soon that will unlock the car’s full performance. This is likely to be a software tweak so existing owners should also receive the upgrade.
The Model S P100D can already sprint to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and pass the quarter mile in 10.78 seconds. Its EPA-rated range is 315 miles.
