The Colorado wildfires that postponed the 2012 running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb destroyed 600 homes, scorched huge swaths of forest, and generally caused mayhem. For fans of rally there's another loss to tally: Walter Röhrl has canceled his planned entry in the Audi Sport quattro S1.

No explanation was given to Pikes Peak organizers, but the message was clear: Röhrl is no longer able to attend. Whether it's due to a scheduling conflict or some other reason, the result is the same, and we're disappointed we won't get to see the legendary combo on the mountain.

It would have been quite a sight, too, with the 600-horsepower turbo S1 unleashed on the now nearly completely paved course.

The rescheduled PPIHC will run Sunday, August 12th, featuring the likes of Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima at the wheel of an electric prototype, Romain Dumas in a Porsche 997 GT3R, and our friends at Evolution Dynamics, Jeremy Foley and Yuri Kouznetsov.
