The Detroit Auto Show is still underway--in fact, just at the midpoint of press days--but already Infiniti is looking ahead to the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, teasing its upcoming electric sports car concept.

The images in the gallery below show what little of car we can see for now, and a few details give us a hint at what's to come.

So what does Infiniti want us to expect? A range-extended electric sports car with low emissions and high performance, combined with the ability to deliver zero-emission driving in urban environments. The engine--and presumably hybrid/electric drivetrain--are to be placed amidships, meaning it's a bit more supercar-esque than your average range-extended electric concept.

Infiniti has teased this concept before, around the time of the Los Angeles Auto Show, with a single image. The two new images add to the pre-Geneva speculation with complex details and a hint at the muscular flanks and curves that will adorn the concept car. In addition to showing the way forward for Infiniti's higher-end sports-electric drivetrains, the upcoming Geneva concept is likely to preview some new design directions for the brand as well.

We'll keep you posted on all of the latest with the Infiniti extended-range electric sports car concept as the details develop in the weeks and months leading up to the Geneva Motor Show, and of course we'll be live on the ground in Geneva with photos, information, and video to give you the full picture once the show is up and running.
