The Tiptronic auto transmission found in the 911 Turbo is already quicker than the manual version, and now Porsche is adding the final nail to the coffin of traditional manual gearboxes with its plans to introduce a new seven-speed dual-clutch Direct-Shift Gearbox. The new DSG setup will be featured in Porsche’s entire range, which will include the yet to be released GT1 supercar.

The DSG system has already proven its mettle in the Bugatti Veyron, with the ability to handle more than 1000 horsepower. And, purists may criticize the DSG, but they cannot deny that the new gearboxes have much quicker shift speeds than conventional manual transmissions.

This is just another reason why Porsche made a smart move in getting involved with Volkswagen. Access to VW Group technologies like the DSG will make it much easier for Porsche to compete against the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
