Audi’s upcoming A5 coupe is just around the corner and should give the recently launched BMW 3-Series Coupe some serious competition upon its release. Latest images of the sleek new coupe undergoing testing on the busy streets of Paris have turned up, with latest rumors suggesting that the new car will be based on the next-generation A4 platform and will feature sporty S5 and RS 5 variants.

Both performance breeds will receive the current 4.2-liter V-8 from the A4 with the latter model developing around 420 horsepower. Lesser models are expected to include Audi’s TFSI and FSI motors, ranging from 2.0 liters in displacement up to a 3.6-liter V-6. The expected launch date will be in the second half of next year ahead of the car’s official debut, most likely at the Geneva Motor Show in that same year. The coupe will then be joined by a convertible version featuring a folding metal roof in early 2008.
