The Chevrolet Equinox has been completely redesigned for the 2018 model year.

A new Equinox isn’t normally something to get excited about but this third-generation model marks the debut of some significant technologies for General Motors Company [NYSE:GM].

For example, it will be offered with an all-turbocharged powertrain lineup, which is a first for Chevy in North America. It will also offer a fuel-efficient diesel engine, plus a new 9-speed automatic across the range.

The vehicle rides on the SUV version of the D2XX compact car platform. The platform is front-wheel-drive-based but has the option of all-wheel drive.

The diesel engine is a 1.6-liter inline-4 that delivers 136 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. This is mainly to appeal to buyers in markets where diesel is favored but it should still appeal to local buyers looking for ultimate mileage. GM estimates 40 mpg highway for the diesel-powered Equinox, most likely with front-wheel drive.

The other available engines are 1.5- and 2.0-liter inline-4s. They deliver 170 hp and 252 hp, respectively.

Sales of the new Equinox commence in spring 2017. In other markets the vehicle replace the unloved Captiva.
