With an all new Camaro just around the corner, Ford wasn’t going to leave its aging Mustang untouched. According to the November issue of Road & Track, the 2009 model will receive a facelift that should give the Stang a harder edge and less of the retro styling - expect a more aggressive front end. Engine updates include Ford’s new 3.5-litre V6 in the base model, which should develop at least 260hp. So the V6 model doesn’t step on the toes of the larger displacement GT version, the current 4.6-litre V8 is likely to be replaced with a 5.0-litre version with around 350 to 400hp.

An all new Mustang is due in 2012, which will share the platform with the next generation Ford Falcon sedan from Australia. The new pony car will feature the same basic shape but is described as more angular, with sharper lines and swoops. The 2012 model year may also mark the return of the Mustang hatchback and a new four-door version that could resemble the 427 Concept. The best news is that the car will receive a new multi-link independent rear suspension instead of that aging unit as found in the current version.
