Cadillac’s SRX is expected to come in for an update by 2011, by which time an all-new BMW X3-sized crossover may also see the light of day. Designed primarily for European markets, the new crossover will be based on the same platform used for the upcoming Saab 9-4 compact crossover.

This platform is in turn loosely based on Chevrolet Malibu running gear, which means US versions will likely get GM’s new direct-injection 3.6L V6 petrol engine and possibly a new two-mode hybrid system and E85 biofuel options. Motor Trend reports that there’s also a diesel V6 engine in the works for Europe, and the efficient powerplant will likely be compliant in all 50 US states as well.

Styling elements will be lifted from the rest of Caddy’s fleets, so expect to see vertically stacked headlights, flat surfaces, and strong crease lines.
