BMW has issued a recall that affects five different models from the 2012 to 2014 model years. The reason behind the recall is a vacuum pump fitted to the cars, used for supplying brake power assistance, may end up failing. Should this occur, owners will find it difficult to apply full braking power, increasing the potential of a crash.

The recall affects 2012-2014 320i, 328i, 320i xDrive and 328i xDrive sedans; 2014 328i xDrive Sports Wagons; 2012-2013 528i and 528i xDrive sedans;  2013-2014 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i crossovers; and 2012-2014 Z4 sDrive28i roadsters.

According to BMW, there are 76,191 vehicles affected in the U.S. alone.

Owners of the affected cars should start receiving notices by phone or post in November. The solution requires the application of sufficient lubrication on the vacuum pump of their cars, which will prevent the component from failing. BMW dealerships will provide this service, free of charge.
