There are few, if any, names that compete with that of Steve McQueen in the realm of American automotive movie lore. As a legitimate race car driver and lover of all things fast and powerful, McQueen's bio pic is drawing the attention of the automotive faithful as well as fans of vintage 1960s and 1970s American cinema such as 'Bullit', 'Le Mans' and 'The Great Escape'.

The choice for the actor to play the leading role will be a crucial one in making the movie a success, and the latest reports confirm nearly two years worth of rumors, tipping Brad Pitt as the man about to sign for the spot as McQueen, according to the Examiner.

In addition to recapturing the life of the legendary American, the film is sure to show off some truly impressive and lust-inducing feats of automotive craftsmanship. McQueen's personal stable of cars included a Jaguar XKSS (in British racing green, of course), a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air, a 1957 Porsche Speedster, and a 1963 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso, among many others. Even a re-creation of the famous green Mustang used for the epic chase scene in 'Bullit' (pictured), is likely to grace the screen.

And that doesn't even scrape the surface of the race cars he drove or other cars he piloted on-screen, let alone the rest of his private collection. The film is expected to begin production later this year with a 2010 debut.
