'2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible' shows up in Google searchEnlarge Photo
About a week ago we were tipped off that doing a search of “GT00” in Google would result in “2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500 | The Cobra of Performance Cars” as an item on Ford Motor Company’s [NYSE:F] website. Clicking through the link would take you to the 2017 Mustang landing page, albeit with “shelbygt500” in the URL.
While that search result no longer shows up, Motor.es has discovered that doing a search of “GT500 convertible” results in “2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500 Convertible | Amazing...“ as the heading of a page on the Ford website. Once again, clicking through this link also takes you to the 2017 Mustang landing page, and now there’s “shelbygt500convertible” in the URL.
Both instances could simply be database remnants of the previous-generation Shelby GT500, though there’s also the more likely possibility that the two URLs are placeholders set up in preparation for a new range-topping version of the sixth-generation Mustang reviving the popular Shelby GT500 moniker. If accurate, it means a new Shelby GT500 could be landing much sooner than previously thought—as a 2017 model instead of a 2018.

Prototypes for the range-topping Mustang have been spotted near Ford test centers in Michigan. The test vehicles suggest that the Mustang range-topper will get a unique front section with an aggressive splitter, widened track and power bulge on the hood.
We’ve also heard that the engine Ford is planning will be its most powerful ever fitted to a road car, with the output eclipsing the 662 horsepower of the previous GT500 and perhaps even the 707 hp of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.
We’ll bring you an update as we know more.
