Honda Civic Si prototype video preview

Honda’s in the process of filling out the new Civic lineup with the sharp-looking coupe, terrific sedan, and finally a hatchback again.

On the performance end of the Civic lineup, we’ve been teased with a Type R variant. But before that arrives, we'll get a new Civic Si.

We got our first look at the new Civic Si at the 2016 Los Angeles auto show.

Honda says this Civic Si is a prototype--for now at least. We're told it's a very thinly veiled version of the production car. The big intakes up front, center exhaust out back, and rear wing are all functional, and coming to a showroom near you.

Inside it’s standard Civic fare with sporty cloth seats that have the Si logo embroidered on them. Aluminum pedal covers give a sporty feel, and the 6-speed shift knob.

Under the hood is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 which sends power to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission--the only gearbox that will be offered.

How much power you ask? Honda won’t say, but the minimum feels like 200 these days for this segment, and we wouldn’t be shocked to see 220 or 230 horsepower.

There’s also a new active damper system, active steering system, and limited-slip differential, all of which should make it to production.

Rolling out next year the Si will be available in both sedan and coupe form. There's no word on pricing or fuel economy yet.

Stay tuned for our first drive.
