The Lexus RX is big business for the brand, representing a substantial portion of total sales. So it’s important to get the luxury crossover just right. This is a teaser for the next generation of that cash cow—and it looks like it may be considerably different than the car it replaces.

A single teaser image, shot from a high rear-three-quarter angle, shows what looks a lot like a coupe-style profile, with the C pillar swooping downward to become almost parallel with the rear fender.

It’s not clear if that’s just a visual cue to give the impression of a fastback profile, or if the roofline follows the curve. If so, it might compromise the practicality of a vehicle that lives and breathes on its daily driver functionality.

That rear fender is strongly flared, bulging below the dual-edged character line running high along the side of the RX.

Aggressively angular tail lights, a stepped hood design, and scooped door-handle cutouts are the extent of the other details visible in this teaser shot—at first.

Fiddling with the image in Photoshop, we see more detail, including the squared-rounded wheel arches, plastic wheel arch liners for a more off-road look, a dual character crease along the bottom of the doors/sill area, and what appears to be the edge of a steeply angled hatch mating with that coupe-stile C pillar.

We’ll have the full details, plus live photos, straight from the floor of the 2015 New York Auto Show in just a few weeks' time.
