Shelby SuperCars Names 275-MPH Supercar Tuatara

Follow Viknesh

Right now the fastest production car in the world is the hyper exclusive--and hyper expensive--Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which is capable of a top speed of 268 mph. The previous record holder was the less refined yet still very capable Ultimate Aero from America’s own Shelby SuperCars (SSC), which itself stole the record from the original Veyron. Today, as Rupert Murdoch prepares to defend his actions before Parliament, we've uploaded some new photos of the car showing more detail of the brakes, front-end, and logo.

Now SSC is set to reclaim the manufacturer of the world’s fastest production title from Bugatti with a brand new supercar, a supercar that has been revealed today will go by the name Tuatara (pronounced twu-tar-ah).

Yes, SSC has taken a page out of Pagani’s book and given its latest supercar a name almost as strange as Huayra but there is some reasoning behind the decision.

The name Tuatara was inspired by the Maori word for a lizard found in New Zealand (the Maori are the indigenous people of the tiny island nation). The Tuatara lizard boasts the fastest evolving DNA in the world, and this fast-paced evolution is something SSC’s designers think their new supercar encapsulates.

As the founder of SSC, Jerod Shelby, explains: “Most manufacturers essentially use the same basic model and body shape for up to 10 years, while only making small refinements to it each year. After only three years in production with the Ultimate Aero, SSC’s Tuatara is about to monumentally evolve in the areas of sophistication, design, aerodynamics and shear all-around performance. We felt that the fastest evolving DNA was a perfect definition of SSC’s latest project.”

Along with the new name, SSC also released more specs for its upcoming supercar. Its body will be composed entirely of carbon fiber and wrapped around a chassis made of the same stuff. The crash structures will be aluminum, however, the wheels will also be made from carbon fiber.

The engine will be a twin-turbocharged 7.0-liter V-8 developing upwards of 1,350 horsepower, and drive will be sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed manual transmission, yes like the one Porsche is rumored to be working on for its new 911, or a seven-speed sequential manual with paddle-shifters.

No mention of top speed though a 275 mph figure has been circulating for a while now. Pictured above is a concept version of the car that was shown to select clientele earlier this year. It was penned by none other than Jason Castriota, the former Bertone stylist responsible for the Mantide and now head of design at Saab.

Thanks to Darren for sending in the tip!

  2. I always felt the Ultmate Aero to be a Diablo knockout and the Diablo is still the far better looking car. Speedwise, they certainly can deliver but for this Aero II, the design is no doubt a class of its own and certainly a very good looking car. Well, something to look forward to. And somebody please get rid of the annoying pop up ads!

  6. ahhh the old competition of who has the bigger appendage that needs to be owned by a small minority.
The Veyron is and always will be the pinnacle in cars, and the one out of most true car lovers would aspire to. It is fast yet tactile. and the true champion no matter what this faux hypercar does on the speedo.

  7. IMO 268mph, $2,000,000 price tag, and a brutal propaganda are the foundations of the myth behind the Veyron. But there is nothing extraordinary about its looks. If the SSS Aero II is able to set a 275mph record, then its extraordinary looks, its features, and specs will become a myth, it will get a unique halo and for sure many European customers will find an Aero as appealing as Americans find a Veyron appealing

  9. 275 MPH my @$$! we'll see and even if it comes close to the SuperSports Veyron it will never have the history, heritage, name, or class the the Veyron holds to even consider a $1M+ Price tag! Plus it's super ugly.

  10. seems that the Yanks on here dont like the truths from outside their own borders. The Veyron is the ulitmate car....END OF. A car that is built to go in a fast in a straight line (cant corner) out of the USA is only liked in the USA. jeez Calloway was buidling hyper corvettes (Sledgehammer anyone?) decades ago that were some and still are some of the fastest cars of all time. But like this one above had no style or substance nor class.
there is more that goes on outside the the US borders than in, its a big world out there time to take off ye old red white and blue tinted galsses

  11. Guys, why all the hate? SSC hasn't come out and said they are building the best supercar in the world, that it can trounce the Bugatti. All they have done is build a car capable of being the fastest in production--and doing it in record time, which they should be boasting.

We should be encouraging and praising such companies. Not criticizing them. They are not forcing their cars an anyone. The buyer will decide if they want it or not.

    I don't understand the hate.

  12. then by your logic it is a competition being taken on by SSC as who has a larger appendage by just going for outright speed, meanwhile Volkswagen group decide to build the best car possible. there is no comparison, the Bugatti is still better even if the top speed record is taken away because it was built to do everything perfectly, while the SSC is purpose built to jsut go fast. There are homologated Le Mans racers for the road that are faster than this.
there is no hate, jsut being a realist.
oh and the name is horrible. I know its not that close but Steak Tartare LOL ?

  14. What on earth were they bloody thinking of naming an uber hyper-car from a very slow moving reptile and a very ugly one at that?
A very preposterous idea really.. why can't they name it after a god or some fast moving animal?
Give it a proper name for goodness sake.
