Look out Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes—there’s a new king of the high-performance SUV hill, and it’s Land Rover.

With a documented lap time of 8 minutes, 14 seconds, the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR lays claim to the title of the world’s fastest production SUV around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The new SUV will being reaching customers sometime in 2015.

With 550 horsepower on tap from its 5.0-liter supercharged V-8, and a host of other upgrades from its SVR treatment, it’s perhaps no surprise that the newest super-SUV is also the quickest.

"The Nürburgring is a benchmark for vehicle development and testing, and cars become stronger, more durable and faster over its 13 miles and 70-plus corners,” said Mike Cross, chief engineer vehicle integrity. “We wanted to see whether an SUV could behave like a performance car in this challenging environment. The results are spectacular and the Range Rover Sport SVR has demonstrated outstanding on-road performance capabilities."

That 8:14 lap time does put the Ranger Rover Sport SVR in some real performance car company—the Acura NSX, E60 BMW M5, and last-generation Porsche Cayman S are all within few seconds of the SVR’s time. Not bad for an SUV that still carries a low-range transfer case and 33.5” water fording capabilities.

Not bad at all.
