The latest Range Rover Sport only hit the street in the past year, but Land Rover is aiming even higher than the already-potent Range Rover Sport Supercharged variant with a new model, to be badged an SVR. The plan is to put even more power and sharper handling into the Range Rover Sport's package and see what can be done.

Land Rover showed off its new Range Rover Sport SVR in prototype form at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Our own spy shots of a Range Rover Sport SVR prototype at the Nürburgring show it has shed the previous camouflage pattern for a new bright blue graphic wrap—allowing us to see more of the detail in the sheetmetal underneath. Previous reports have compared a possible super-performance Range Rover Sport to the Jaguar XKR-S—adding to the formula in logical, incremental steps.

Those steps, Land Rover has confirmed, will see the Range Rover Sport SVR pack a 550-horsepower version of Jaguar Land Rover’s supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 as well as a host of other upgrades. These will include sporty Recaro bucket seats, an uprated anti-roll system, stiffer suspension, and revised tuning of the Range Rover Sport’s eight-speed ZF automatic. You can bet a set of beefy brakes will also be fitted.

Gauging the body roll in the photos, the Range Rover Sport SVR also looks to be quite a bit stiffer than previous high-po Sports. Other details visible in the photos include a new, lower front bumper with larger air intakes and a larger rear spoiler.

The Range Rover Sport SVR will be the first volume product from Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Vehicles Operations, the personalization unit of the British automaker whose first model was the stunning F-Type Project 7. Key rivals will include the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and BMW X5 M/X6 M.

Look for a debut in the second half of 2014, which means we’ll most likely see it as a 2015 model. We'll be following the development of the Range Rover SVR in detail as it progresses, so check this space for more news in the near future.
