2015 Subaru WRX STI & Mark Higgins Isle Of Man TT Car Lap Record: Full Lap Video

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, or TT, is a famously challenging event, populated by people who know neither limits nor fear. But while the super bike riders get all of the credit for the event’s popularity and history, Subaru has made it a place for car people, too. Earlier this month, the company announced a second lap record for cars around the 37-mile circuit, breaking the record set earlier that week.

At an average speed of 116.470 mph and a time of 19 minutes, 26 seconds, the record run was no small feat, the same man who set the record in 2010--in another WRX STI--Mark Higgins, wanted another shot to clean up some mistakes. The new result? An average speed of 117.510 mph and a lap time of 19 minutes, 15 seconds.

"This was a great run when everything came together and I was able to do a much cleaner lap as I am still learning where I can go flat in this car,” said Higgins. “I am really happy to beat the lap records set by John McGuiness in the Zero Bikes and the sidecar lap record as John was riding me about that! I can’t say enough about the new WRX STI and how much abuse it has taken as we have really ridden it hard over this course for three very fast runs and this is definitely not an easy course. The chassis on this new car is just night and day.”

Higgins set the new record in a U.S.-spec, road-going 2015 Subaru WRX STI, modified only with an FIA-spec roll cage, racing seat, harness, fire-suppression system, Dunlop Direzza tires, open exhaust, and upgraded springs and dampers. The speed limiter was also removed for maximum pace.

The previous record, run in a similarly modified 2010 WRX STI, saw Higgins complete the Snaefell Mountain Circuit lap in 19 minutes, 56.7 seconds at an average speed of 115.36 mph. For a closer look at the car used to set the new record, watch the video below.
