It was only yesterday that we got our first look at the production version of Volkswagen’s New Midsize Coupe concept thanks to leaked photos out of China, and now new photos of the next-generation Volkswagen Passat, the B8, have surfaced via similar channels. This is the version of the Passat designed for the rest of the world, and the one recently spotted in prototype form in Europe.

It’s shown here in its specification for the Chinese market, where the car is known as a Magotan. It appears VW designers have borrowed elements from the latest Audi A6. We can also see a strong shoulder line, which is a distinct feature of VW’s new design language. Additional shots posted on Car News China (via World Car Fans) reveal more of the car, including its interior.

The next-generation Passat is due for an official reveal later this year, most likely at the 2014 Paris Auto Show in October. Underpinning the car is VW’s flexible MQB platform, whose uniform mounting position for all available engines will enable a greater variety of engine and gearbox combinations. We’re also expecting a plug-in option.

The next Passat for the American market is still a couple of years away. In the meantime, the current model, introduced for the 2012 model year, will receive a significant update for 2016 to help fend off rivals. In addition to revised styling, the car will also benefit from new tech features such as electronic driver assistance systems.
