The first teaser image (if you don't count our screen captures from an official Lexus video
) of the 2013 Lexus LS has been released on Lexus' Facebook page, in advance of the car's July 30 unveiling
So far, we know very little about the upcoming LS. Lexus has told us it will be sold in LS 460, LS 460 L, LS 600h L, and LS 460 F Sport variants, but nothing else. From the image, we can interpret the rough profile of the car, and while it's nothing shocking, we wouldn't expect that from Lexus--the design devil will be in the details.
From the model names, we can surmise that much of the existing powertrain lineup will carry forward--with updates, of course--but the bright spot in the nomenclature is the LS 460 F Sport, which will be a sharper, quicker, perhaps more powerful version
of the smallest of the LS breed.
That's an enticing proposal, especially with BMW working on an M Division 7-Series
, and, of course, Mercedes-Benz's full-size performance stalwart, the S63 AMG, already occupying a similar space.
With Lexus' recent spate of design successes and renewed focus on performance (even down to its Scion brand, with the FR-S), could this be yet another step in the eradication of malaise within the Japanese powerhouse? Are we seeing the rekindling of a legitimate interest in, and value for, the enthusiast? We certainly hope so.
