Next year Kia is expected to launch a new full-size sedan
based on its Quoris model sold overseas. However, shortly after we may see the Korean automaker move even further upmarket, with reports claiming a production version of 2011’s striking GT four-door coupe concept
will be launched in 2016.
Without mentioning a source, Auto Express
claims the production GT will stick to the four-door coupe formula but its powertrain will likely be more modest. The original concept featured a turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 rated at 390 horsepower, but the production version is said to make do with just a turbocharged four-cylinder. An alternative powertrain, such as a diesel or hybrid, is also said to be on the cards.
According to the original concept’s designer, Peter Schreyer, who now heads the design departments of both Kia and sister brand Hyundai, the GT could be Asia’s version of dynamic four-door coupes offered by the German automakers. The segment was started by the original Mercedes-Benz CLS and has since been expanded by the likes of the Audi A7, BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe and Porsche Panamera.Auto Express
is also reporting that there are major plans ahead for Kia. The automaker is tipped to be presenting a new roadster concept at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January as well as a sporty version of its Rio compact hatch._______________________________________Follow Motor Authority on Facebook, Twitter, and Google +.
