There’s been talk of the Kia GT concept spawning a production version ever since the covers came off the stunning four-door coupe back at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. The last we heard Kia was targeting a launch for the car sometime in 2016.
Speaking to Edmunds, Kia executives have reaffirmed production plans for the car and stated that the U.S. will be one of its key markets. It would compete in a similar segment to that of the Audi A7 and BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, although likely at around half the price of the Germans.
While not expected to be a big seller, Kia hopes to boost the image of its brand with the car’s looks and performance. The recently launched K900 has made some luxury buyers take note of Kia, and the production version of the GT might persuade some performance buyers too.
Expect the car to come with a V-6 engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. A diesel will likely be offered overseas and there’s also been talk of a hybrid option being offered as well.
