Land Rover says its new DC100 concept, set for the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, is a precursor to a new Defender.

The SUV maker indicates a new Defender is on the way--but in the release accompanying these photos, says there's been no plan to market a version of the new off-roader in North America.

The new-generation Defender will be launched by 2015, according to the release.

Chief Land Rover designer Gerry McGovern is stated as saying: "Replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world; it is a car that inspires people worldwide. This isn't a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century."

No details on the concept's running gear were released, but are set to be announced during the Land Rover press conference in Frankfurt on September 13, 2011.

    considering the people who buy the Defendor, this would be a sales nightmare. it woudl be changing the dynamic completely. call it a DiscoJr instead and you would have more success...
    actually the name DC signifys that it is a DisCovery as opposed to the Defendor

    I think DC actually stands for Defender Concept, but I agree, this looks like it has nothing to do with the original, although perhaps it has to go this way to remain relevant.

    From the 'A' pillar back looks modern, and good to me. The front end looks like an Xterra. Not that there is anything wrong with the Xterra, but when you're talking about the Defender there are much higher expectations from this icon. Come on, Land Rover can do better than this.
