After a three-year absence from World Rally Championship competition, the legendary Rallye Monte Carlo will be back on the schedule in 2012 as the season opener. The Rallye Monte Carlo celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, but a return is better late than never.
In the WRC's absence, Monte Carlo didn't fall off the map, however, playing host to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge instead. The return to Monte Carlo as the season opener re-establishes a tradition that ran from 1973 through 2008.
With three years away from the event and teams prepping new cars under S2000 rules for next season, it will be interesting to see how they tackle the notoriously difficult Col de Turini special stage.
The 2012 Rallye Monte Carlo will be held the weekend of January 21-22.
