More Talk Of Porsche's Four-Cylinder Boxster/Cayman Plans

2012 Porsche Boxster spy shots

Porsche officials have been talking about the possibility and development of a four-cylinder engine for the next-gen Boxster and Cayman since at least 2008. Today, a few more speculative details have emerged.

The report claims the four-cylinders will get turbocharged variants and will churn out a potent 310 and 355 horsepoer in Turbo and S models. The base four-banger is expected to turn out about 270 horsepower.

Those figures jibe well with earlier reports citing former Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Duerheimer. The four-cylinder is claimed to displace 2.5 liters and feature direct injection as well as the optional turbo.

A hybrid Boxster model is also mentioned, with  a four-cylinder engine backing it up as well, though earlier reports suggested a three-cylinder turbocharged engine could be possible as well, and that mill might pair well with a hybrid system for better efficiency and low-end torque.

We'll keep our ears to the ground as the rumors and reports begin to coalesce into firmer information. In the mean time, there's no reason not to love the 2012 Cayman R, however many cylinders it might have.

  1. I hope the marketing strategists have a good think about the model identifier for the 4cylinder Boxster. History tells us that the moniker of 912 would fit the bill, but since the 911 has gone up market over the past 40 years and the Boxster and Caymen have now filled the gap, the 912 badge would I feel devalue the 911 title.
A name (following the current trend) would support the move to a boxster light. Carefree would be an interest name but the association with women products could be a downer. Chieftain or Creole could also be possible. I hope that the pricing is aggressive enough that it allows people who don’t earn loads of cash the ability to get on the Porsche buying ladder.

  3. I think they can make this 4 banger to be as fast as the 911 Turbo.

  4. NND - it has to have the power to be a Porsche but not too much that it cannibalizes sales away from the Caymen. Look at the detuned engine in the Caymen. It apparantly generates more power than the standard Carrera engine. but to stop it taking sales away from the 911 they gave it appropriate power for the price.
Countach - no they cant the Turbo is amazingly powerful, but more to the point why would they?
