Forbidden Fruit: Land Rover Defender X-Tech

Land Rover Defender X-Tech limited edition

You might think the U.S. has the market cornered on military-inspired off-road awesomeness, but you'd be wrong. The Land Rover Defender is as blocky, brutal, and bashable as any Hummer, and now it's available in a special X-Tech limited edition.

Unfortunately, it's not available in the U.S. Starting with the base Defender, the X-Tech adds a unique color combo (Zermatt Silver with Santorini Black roof and wheel arches), special 16-inch Saw Tooth alloy wheels and an available Ebony interior with leather seat trim.

Power comes from a 2.4-liter diesel rated at 265 pound-feet of torque for all the mountain-goaty climbing and crawling you could want. The price? Just £24,995--a relative bargain in U.K. terms, as a base Ford Kuga starts at £20,995 there.

Time for some grey-market imports? We think so.

  1. Too bad the U.S. won't get this leaner, meaner back-to-basics off-roader. With the Hummer gone and this beast getting back to Land Rover's roots, it would be nice to have this practical option available. It would be a fresh product, rather than the gawdy parking lot cruisers that U.S. Land Rovers have evolved to.
