The 2012 Audi RS3 is a bit of an automotive jackalope. It's been the subject of many tales, including expected appearances at both the Frankfurt and Paris auto shows; it's been illustrated, and even captured, in obscured form, in spy photographs. But the RS3 has yet to make its public debut.

Today, images that purport to be of the actual steering wheel and instrument cluster of the mythical beast have sparked talk of the mighty hatch anew. Taken against a backing of what looks like tile floor, the steering wheel and cluster both bear badges emblazoned with the "RS3" moniker. That these could easily be fakes has not escaped us; that we wish them to be real, and for the car to be U.S.-bound, hasn't either.

Why should we hope for the RS3 to reach our shores? Sub-five-second 0-60 mph times, a potential top speed of 174 mph, 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque from a turbo five-cylinder, and of course, quattro all-wheel-drive all sound like very good reasons.

Since the 2012 Audi RS3 has missed its expected debut dates through the end of this year, it seems most likely to wait until the spring, for a debut at the Geneva show in March.
